Miss
Margarita Guigova from Bulgaria is a member of the GRSP Class of
2003-2004. Sponsored by the Gwinnett Rotary Club, she studied law at
the University of Georgia. Margarita recently graduated with a
Master’s degree in International Relations and European Union (EU)
Law from Sofia University and the University of Nancy, France. After
taking 14 exams on different EU law topics and a final state exam,
Margarita finished in the top 10 of a class of 120 judges,
prosecutors, attorneys and other legal professionals, most much
older than her. As a result, Margarita was awarded a trip to the
institutions of the EU in Brussels, Luxembourg, Strasbourg, Nancy
and Paris. “This Master’s degree and the visit to the EU
institutions will open up a lot of possibilities for me should I
decide to make a shift from the private practice as a trademark and
copyright attorney to the public sector and the European politics
which have always been my long-term goal,” said Margarita.

Rotary
International
Convention
Once again GRSP was
represented at the Rotary International Convention,
which was held in Los Angeles, California in June. Many
thanks to GRSP 6900 District Chair Blake McBurney for
transporting the display and to DGE 6920 Clyde Taylor
for spearheading the coordination of the many Rotarians
throughout the state who volunteered to staff the booth
and share information about GRSP with the entire Rotary
world. We are looking forward to receiving many
applications from qualified candidates as a result of
their combined efforts. DG 6920 Kenan Kern is shown
in the picture speaking with one of the many visitors to
the display. (Posted July 2008) |

Did
you know...
that GRSP has a theme song? For GRSP's 50th anniversary in 1996,
the students were asked to write letters to Ronnie Waller, who was retiring
as program chairman, answering the question, “Is Peace Possible?” While
binding the books, Janis Comer, program administrator, composed a poem.
After reading the poem that Janis entitled, "Peace," Kay and Maynard
Knestrick, program trustees, forwarded the words to Bernie Wong, a GRSP
student at the State University of West Georgia (class of 94-95).
Interestingly, he had just written a melody with which the words fit
perfectly. The
song
was first introduced at the 50th Anniversary Conclave in Thomasville, Georgia, and is sung by every class of
students. (Posted Jan. 2008)

Meet
Dr. I.M. Ibrahim
Sponsored
by the Rome Rotary Club
Shorter College, Class of 1960-61
Dr. Ibrahim M. Ibrahim began at Clemson as a
professor of chemistry until 1967 when the university
decided to start a varsity soccer program. Dr. Ibrahim
was named head coach and eventually led Clemson to
national prominence.
He led Clemson to two of their
four National Championships, more than any other sport
in the college's history. His team won the National
Championship in 1984 and 1987. He had a career record of
388-100-31 as soccer coach and finished in the top 20
for 18 seasons. During his tenure he also led the team
to six NCAA Final Four Appearances, 17 NCAA Appearances,
and 11 ACC Championships along with 13 regular season
titles.
Dr. Ibrahim had 16 players earn 24
All-American Honors. He also had 51 Tigers to be named
to the All-ACC First-Team 92 times. He coached three
U.S. Olympians and eight players were named ACC
Players-of-the-Year 12 times. He retired from coaching
in 1994 as the nation's fifth 'winningest' coach. He is
still thought of today when Clemson's men's soccer is
mentioned.
"Thanks to the Georgia Rotary Student Program, I was
able to carve out a busy life for myself. I think of
that wonderful opportunity over and over again... no one
knows how much it meant to a young man growing up in
Israel who was not Jewish," said Dr. Ibrahim.
